My first return to California after 12 years. I knew some crossings were still left, but some of them I was pretty surprised at what I saw.
NOTE: THE RECORDED TIME IS IN ARIZONA TIME, WHICH WAS ONE HOUR AHEAD AT THE TIME. SUBTRACT ONE HOUR FOR CALIFORNIA TIME.
California Ave. - Some modified 8 and 12" griswold signals activate with a UP train slowly crossing. There's one mechanical and one electronic bell at this crossing. |
Live Oak Canyon - A mix of 12" standard and wide lights with a fast ringing bell that kept on going off at times. |
Lomita Blvd #1 - A BNSF train is unloading its cargo. It keeps on going back and forth across this heavy used crossing by semi trucks. Note the sour fast ringing bell at times. That's the bell from the opposite signal. |
Lomita Blvd. #2 - There's a second crossing right next to the first one. I was getting views for the website, when they start up. They only activate for a few seconds then quit. |
Manville Blvd. - A Metrolink train activates this crossing. It hasn't changed much in the 12 years I was last there. |
Pennsylvania Ave. - A short train moving at a very slow speed makes this crossing a long one. |
San Timoteo - Another set of griswolds activate with the same UP train from the California and Live Oak Canyon crossings. These griswolds are not modified in any way, except for graffiti. |
Veile Ave - A 12" L.E.D. mast only crossing gets activated by a UP train that blows its whistle a little more than usual. The bells are also very loud as well. Near the end of the crossing, another SP train going faster than the UP crosses. |
Wardlow Depot #1 - This Metrolink depot is located next to Wardlow Rd. 2. This first look is at a Northbound train picking up passengers. It only waits for 15 seconds before moving on. |
Wardlow Depot #2 - Southbound Metrolink activates the 2 crossbuckless signals. The signals keep on going even when the train stops to unload. |
Wardlow Blvd.- Another Metrolink crossing. The last time I was at the Spring crossing in 1991, I wasn't ready for the bells quitting after the gates went down. I was ready this time. |
Water St. #1 - A BNSF loco goes back and forth across the Water #1 and Fries #3 crossing. It sits there for a few minutes, then decides to back up, therefore deactivating the signals. NOTE: I WAS TOO BUSY WITH MY SURROUNDINGS THAT THE VIDEO SOMETIMES TRAILS OFF. |
Water St. #2 - Same train, same scenario, same 2 crossings, different angle, and not as long as the other crossing. The whistle kind of sounds like the old SP locos. |
Wilmington Blvd. #1 - This BNSF train was already here when I got here. I shot the very end of the train. |
Wilmington Blvd. #2 - The BNSF gets close enough to activate the signals again, but then pulls away, deactivating them. In both videos, one bell quits ringing while the other one rings when the gates go up. |
THE FOLLOWING VIDEOS ARE FROM THE ORANGE EMPIRE RAILROAD MUSEUM
Alpine #1 - The peach basket wigwags malfunction a couple of times because of a short in the wiring. NOTE: NIGHT VIDEO. |
Alpine #2 - They activate again when a trolley crosses. NOTE: NIGHT VIDEO. |
Alpine #3 - The wigwags malfunction a couple of times before the trolley come back across. NOTE 1: NIGHT VIDEO NOTE 2: THE FOCUS GETS FUZZY AT TIMES BECAUSE THE CAMCORDER ISN'T VERY GOOD AT NIGHT SHOTS. |
Central - A rare wigwag with STOP letters activates for a trolley. |
Signal Garden - A montage of videos featuring signals on display at the Orange Empire Railroad Museum. |
REVIEWS
gtw4070@gmail.com: I watched California signals 2003 first. It was great, I enjoyed every second of it. The crossing I was most eager to see, California Ave, was first and I was quite happy about that. The Veile Ave crossing was nice too. I have never seen one train trying to get ahead of another.
Senko LKE: California Signals 2003 is a very nice DVD, with a wide variety of signals to look at. From gateless to gates, from L.E.D. to incandescent, and from mech. bells to e-bells. This DVD has almost everything. It even has wig-wags, and more importantly, Griswold signals! A very good DVD to buy and watch over and over.
My favorite: San Timoteo Rd., because if shows some completely original and not modified in any way, Griswold crossing signals, something that I've never seen before.
