This is an interesting crossing. These signals look a little older than most are around the area. These pictures were taken back in 2003. |

The Eastbound signal. |
A rusty MI bell. |
The relay case with no ID on it. |
A chunk of the right background is missing. |
A Safetran bell, with cantilever supports. |
Facing South. |
The DOT number. |
A full view. |
There's a bracket here. I wonder if there used to be a "STOP ON RED SIGNAL" sign here in the past. |
Facing North. |
The rail isn't completely dull... |
Pictures 3-13 were taken on October 14, 2006.
The signals activate!
|
The train stops, blocking the crossing. |
A view of the military equipment being moved. |
|
The train is being pushed from the left in pictures 14 and 15 and there is a flagger standing in the street due to the fact that trains haven't been seen here frequently in years and motorists might disobey the signals.
In picture 16, the train stopped for about three minutes in at which point many cars on both sides started turning around.
The locomotive is on the right hand track here, despite the appearance that it is on the left. |
After 20 minutes of back-and-forth movement, the locomotive finally enters the crossing. |
The gates rise while the train is still halfway on the street! |
The train is leaving to the right now. |
In picture 20, the train never leaves the island but due to the fact that the rails are rusted from lack of use, the signals constantly activate and deactivate until the train bridges the island on both sides, at which point they act normally.
In picture 21, A set of cars were uncoupled, reducing the length of the train so it could clear the crossing allowing traffic to move. In total, the crossing was blocked for about 25 minutes!
Note: A military test was run to see how quickly they can load up military combat equipment like Hummers and tanks. Unfortunately this will be one of the last times this crossing will get activity. The flagger in pictures 14 and 15 is from P&W and has confirmed that this crossing and stretch of track will be put out of service later this year.
