The train wasn't very long, and the signal gates go up after less than a minute of being down.

The "X" signs have the same meaning as "W" (Whistile) signs. UP and the Arizona & California Railroad like using these signs for some weird reason.

 

A "W" sign on a UP line means a tunnel is ahead.
